Laos, Myanmar pledge to deepen bilateral cooperation

The Lao and Myanmar Presidents expressed satisfaction with the steady development of the traditional friendship and cooperation between their countries, highlighting strong political ties, high-level mutual trust, effective mutual support, and frequent mutual visits by high-ranking leaders.

Vientiane (VNA) – Laos and Myanmar have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation across a wide range of fields during the state visit to Laos by Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing from July 3 to 5.

The visit, made at the invitation of Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith, aims to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries (July 12, 1955–2025) and further deepen their traditional friendship and close neighbourly cooperation.

Following the official welcome ceremony, the two Presidents held talks to review bilateral ties and discuss directions for future cooperation.

They expressed satisfaction with the steady development of the traditional friendship and cooperation between Laos and Myanmar, highlighting strong political ties, high-level mutual trust, effective mutual support, and frequent mutual visits by high-ranking leaders.

The Presidents also spoke highly of cooperation in key areas, including defence and security, diplomacy, trade, investment, transport, energy, labour and education. They agreed to assign their relevant ministries and agencies to continue discussions, enhance coordination and expand cooperation to deliver more tangible benefits to both countries and their peoples.

The leaders praised the effectiveness of information sharing and border security cooperation, as well as the two countries' mutual support at regional and international forums. They agreed to maintain close coordination within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the United Nations, the Mekong – Lancang Cooperation (MLC) framework and other multilateral mechanisms, and to continue exchanging views on issues of common concern.

President Thongloun Sisoulith congratulated Myanmar on the successful general election and the formation of its new government earlier this year, extending his congratulations to President Min Aung Hlaing on his election victory. He expressed confidence that under Min Aung Hlaing's leadership, Myanmar will continue to achieve peace, stability and prosperity.

For his part, President Min Aung Hlaing thanked the Lao leaders and people for their warm hospitality and reaffirmed Myanmar's commitment to further strengthening bilateral ties.

During the visit, the two sides also signed and exchanged a number of cooperation documents./.
