Hanoi (VNA) - Myanmar authorities destroyed more than 50 tonnes of narcotics worth an estimated 525 million USD on June 26.
The destroyed drugs included heroin, opium, ketamine, cannabis and methamphetamine seized from across the country.
The destruction were carried out simultaneously in Yangon, Mandalay and Taunggyi, the capital of Shan state, to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Myanmar is currently the world's largest producer of opium and the biggest supplier of methamphetamine in Southeast Asia.
Experts say the prolonged conflict has fuelled illicit economies, including drug production, illegal mining and online scam operations.
In January, Myanmar authorities announced they had dismantled three large-scale drug production facilities in Shan State near the Chinese border.
Officials said the sites had the capacity to produce methamphetamine equivalent to around one-third of the total amount of the drug seized nationwide the previous year./.
