Seoul (VNA) - The Republic of Korea (RoK) will support the Philippines in enhancing its ability to respond to cyber threats and security crises through a large-scale bilateral development cooperation project, according to the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) on June 24.
KISA said on June 24 that it has been selected as the implementing agency for the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA)'s "project to establish a national cyber security centre to strengthen the Philippines' cyber crisis response capabilities" and will launch the project.
The project is an official development assistance initiative worth about 39.5 billion KRW (25.6 million USD) to strengthen the Philippines' national cyber crisis response foundation. It will run for about four years from the second half of 2026 through 2029.
The Philippine government is strengthening its policy foundation and response system by formulating a national cybersecurity plan to counter cyber threats arising in the public and private sectors. On June 3, with the RoK-Philippines summit as a momentum, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on digital cooperation, including cybersecurity, expanding the foundation for cooperation in related fields.
Based on its accumulated experience operating national cybersecurity policies and the advanced technologies of domestic information security corporations, KISA formed a consortium and took part in the bidding for this project. As a result, it was finally selected as the implementing agency in May and signed the contract on June 22.
As the lead agency for project implementation, KISA will pursue comprehensive support reflecting local conditions in the Philippines together with consortium corporations. Key components include establishing an information security management system, supporting construction of a national cyber security centre, building a national cyber threat response system, establishing a training system for information security professionals, and operating programs to strengthen information security capabilities.
KISA President Lee Sang-jung said, as digital transformation accelerates, securing cyber crisis response capabilities at the national level is emerging as a key policy task for each country.
Through this project, KISA will contribute to strengthening the Philippines' cyber resilience and actively support the overseas expansion of the advanced technologies of domestic information security corporations, he added./.
