ASEAN, China pledge to bolster science, technology, innovation cooperation

As Chair of the 22nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation (AMMSTI-22), Laos has selected the theme “Advancing ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation (APASTI) for a Resilient, Sustainable and Competitive ASEAN”, reflecting the group’s shared aspiration to accelerate development based on science, technology and innovation, further strengthen regional resilience, and ensure ASEAN maintains its competitiveness in an era of rapid technological transformation, said Lao Deputy Minister of Education and Sports Kingmano Phommahaxay.

Vientiane (VNA) – ASEAN and China have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in science, technology and innovation, promoting joint research, enhancing the exchange and mobility of skilled personnel, and improving technology transfer capacity between the two sides.

The commitment was reiterated at the 13th meeting of the ASEAN – China Joint Science, Technology and Innovation Committee (ACJSTIC-13), co-chaired by Lao Deputy Minister of Education and Sports Kingmano Phommahaxay and Chinese Vice Minister of Science and Technology Lin Xin, in Vientiane, Laos on June 24.

Addressing the meeting, Minister Kingmano said as Chair of the 22nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation (AMMSTI-22), Laos has selected the theme “Advancing ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation (APASTI) for a Resilient, Sustainable and Competitive ASEAN”, reflecting the group’s shared aspiration to accelerate development based on science, technology and innovation, further strengthen regional resilience, and ensure ASEAN maintains its competitiveness in an era of rapid technological transformation.

The Lao official emphasised that China has always been a strong and reliable partner of ASEAN, making active contributions to joint research, exchange and mobility of skilled human resources, technology transfer, and innovation-based cooperation.

He noted that as the bloc moves towards implementing the APASTI Action Plan for 2026–2035, the meeting serves as an important opportunity to review progress, identify new areas of cooperation, and reinforce shared commitments to building a flexible and future-ready science, technology and innovation ecosystem.

The two sides’ commitment and efforts will play an important role in supporting the implementation of the APASTI Action Plan for 2026–2035, and promoting innovation-driven growth across the region, he said, affirming that Laos will continue working with all parties to build a stronger, more resilient and competitive ASEAN through science, technology and innovation./.
