Washington DC (VNA) – Overseas Vietnamese (OVs) expressed their hope that President Luong Cuong’s upcoming working visit to the US will contribute to strongly boosting economic, trade, investment, and science-technology cooperation between the two countries.
The State leader and his spouse, together with a high-ranking delegation of Vietnam, are scheduled to attend the high-level General Debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly and take part in bilateral activities in the US from September 21 to 24.
Talking to Vietnam News Agency correspondents in Washington DC, Gary Thanh Nguyen, Chairman of the patriotic businessmen and Vietnamese people club in the Washington metropolitan area (DMV), held that the leader’s direct participation and address at the high-level General Debate demonstrate Vietnam’s growing stature in the international arena while also demonstrating the country’s proactive and responsible engagement in international affairs.
President Cuong’s bilateral activities in the US carry particular significance as relations between the two countries are thriving, Gary said, noting that following the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership, this trip offers an opportunity to strengthen political trust, expand substantive cooperation, and lay a stepping stone for new progress across various fields in the future.
Gary expressed his hope that the visit will help to strongly fuel bilateral relations in economy, trade, investment, and science – technology, which are key to Vietnam's breakthroughs in the new development pjase. In addition, he also expected greater focus on cooperation in education and training, health care, renewable energy, and climate change as these are directly linked to people’s lives.
He said he believes that with the consensus and determination of both Vietnam and the US, this visit will produce practical outcomes, bringing shared benefits to the two nations.
Thanh voiced his hope that the President’s visit will enable more mechanisms and favourable policies for overseas Vietnamese (OVs) to strengthen ties with the Fatherland, particularly in investment, business, cultural exchange, and education. He affirmed that the over-2.5-million-strong Vietnamese community in the US always remain deeply connected to the homeland
With attention and practical support from the State, the OV community can become an important source of soft power in promoting Vietnam’s image in the international arena as well as strengthening the friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two nations, he said.
He especially welcomed the National Assembly’s adoption of the amended Law on Vietnamese Nationality, describing it as “a new chapter” that gives Vietnamese expats an opportunity to obtain the citizenship, invest, and live in their homeland.
Gary thanked the Vietnamese Government for its broader vision and greater openness toward OVs, creating conditions for them to obtain Vietnamese nationality.
As one of the OVs from the US attending the 80th National Day celebration in Hanoi, Thanh said the event was not only an occasion to commemorate the nation’s heroic history but also a reminder for today’s generation to remember with gratitude, safeguard, and advance those achievements to build a strong and prosperous Vietnam./.
