Algiers (VNA) - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with President of the Algerian Council of the Nation (Algerian Senate) Azzouz Nasri in Algiers on November 20, as part of his official visit to the African nation.
During the meeting, Nasri affirmed that the Vietnamese Government leader’s trip is an important milestone, contributing to creating breakthroughs and elevating bilateral relations to a new level across all areas.
Highlighting the historical Vietnam-Algeria relationship, which has been built and developed fruitfully over many historical periods, he welcomed the two countries’ upgrade of ties to a Strategic Partnership.
Vietnam has always been a priority partner of Algeria and the Senate consistently supports the Algerian government in developing relations with the Southeast Asian nation, he stressed.
The host praised the historical significance of the Dien Bien Phu Victory of Vietnam, describing it as an inspiration for national liberation movements worldwide. He expressed gratitude to Vietnam for its strong support for the Algerian revolution and acknowledged Algeria’s wholehearted assistance to Vietnam until the country’s reunification in 1975.
Nasri expressed pride in the deep and strong ties between the two nations, noting that the elevation of their relationship to a Strategic Partnership marks a new chapter in bilateral relations.
PM Chinh affirmed that Vietnam always remembers Algeria’s support during its national liberation struggle and in the country’s current development efforts, guiding both nations toward a future with renewed trust and shared aspirations.
Both sides highlighted the importance of parliamentary cooperation within the broader framework of bilateral relations. They agreed to enhance effective collaboration between the two legislatures through sharing legislative experience, oversight, and lawmaking; establishing in-depth cooperation programmes between specialised committees; and strengthening connections among parliamentary friendship groups.
Announcing the recently established Strategic Partnership framework and the very positive outcomes of the talks with his Algerian counterpart, the PM proposed the prompt development of concrete action programmes between the two executive branches, alongside a review of cooperation documents to ensure alignment with the new context and current situation.
The Vietnamese leader also said seven cooperation agreements had been signed during the visit, covering trade, housing, urban planning, education, and business connections. He called on the Algerian legislature to continue supporting and creating a solid legal framework for bilateral cooperation, including the ratification of key foundational agreements.
For his part, the host leader spoke highly of the outcomes of PM Chinh’s visit, saying they lay a foundation for shaping a bright future for bilateral relations and the development of each country in the time ahead.
The two leaders affirmed their strong commitment to promoting cultural, sports and artistic exchanges that honour the history and traditions of both peoples, helping citizens of the two countries better understand bilateral ties and strengthen mutual understanding.
Nasri affirmed that he will continue to pay attention to and actively support the Vietnamese community in Algeria, helping them stabilise their lives, contribute to the country’s socio-economic development, and serve as a bridge for friendship between the two nations.
On the multilateral front, the two sides agreed to continue coordinating and supporting each other’s positions in global and regional parliamentary unions and other multilateral forums where both Vietnam and Algeria are members.
Regarding maritime issues, including the East Sea, PM Chinh called on Algeria to back ASEAN’s stance on peacefully resolving disputes and respecting the interests of coastal states in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982).
On this occasion, PM Chinh conveyed an invitation from National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man to the Algerian leader to visit Vietnam in the near future./.
