Tashkent (VNA) - National Assembly (NA) Chairman Tran Thanh Man met with Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) President Tulia Ackson on the afternoon of April 6 (local time) within the framework of the 150th IPU Assembly in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

At the event, the IPU leader expressed appreciation for Chairman Man's participation in the Assembly and highlighted Vietnam's significant contributions since joining the union.

She noted that Vietnam's successful hosting of the 132nd IPU Assembly in 2015 and the 2023 Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians left a strong impression on parliamentarians worldwide, particularly regarding the meticulous organisation, substantive discussions, and the Vietnamese people's hospitality.

Ackson said that Vietnam is frequently cited at IPU conferences and discussions as an exemplary case for promoting gender equality, and women’s and young parliamentarians' empowerment. The IPU President also expressed her admiration for Vietnam’s development achievements, especially in ensuring social justice and welfare for its citizens, with the recent decision to waive all tuition fees for students from kindergarten through high school in the public system across the country.

Sharing Vietnam’s socio-economic development achievements, efforts to ensure social security and improve people’s life quality, along with major development orientations for the time ahead, Man highly valued the IPU’s important role in and contributions to the implementation of its programmes and strategies, the enhancement of the IPU’s cooperation with member parliaments, as well as the promotion of the role and voice of parliaments and parliamentarians.

He thanked Ackson for her good sentiments towards and substantial assistance for Vietnam and its NA, helping advance the country’s cooperation with the IPU.

Ackson said that as a citizen of Tanzani, a country that enjoys good Party-to-Party and Government-to-Government relations with Vietnam, she hopes the legislative bodies of Tanzania and Vietnam will expand cooperation in the time ahead, especially increasing meetings and mutual visits between their specialised agencies and parliamentarians, and sharing law-making experiences.

Man called on Ackson, in her role as Speaker of the NA of Tanzania, to continue promoting cooperation between the two countries, and supporting Vietnam's participation in events and activities of the African Union.

The two sides agreed to coordinate closely to further strengthen the Vietnam – IPU cooperation in the coming time.
