Can Tho (VNA) - Vietnam values traditional friendship with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man said, praising the DRC’s economic achievements and political stabilisation efforts, which have helped enhance its regional standing.

Man made the remarks at a meeting with DRC Speaker of the National Assembly Vital Kamerhe on the sideline of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie (APF) Executive Committee’s meeting and a parliamentary forum on Francophonie cooperation in sustainable agriculture, food security, and climate change response in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on January 22.

Stressing the key role of parliamentary cooperation in relations between the two countries, both bilaterally and multilaterally, the NA Chairman expressed a desire to facilitate high-level exchanges between the two legislatures, and suggested the establishment of a parliamentary friendship group. The two sides aim to boost exchanges among young and female parliamentarians and strengthen coordination at international and regional parliamentary forums, he said.

Vital Kamerhe pointed out the vast potential for collaboration between Vietnam and the DRC, stressing the pivotal role of both parliaments in advancing this partnership. He emphasised agriculture as a crucial driver of economic transformation in the DRC and suggested enhancing cooperation in this field, where Vietnam has notable strengths.

On this occasion, he invited NA Chairman Man to pay an official visit to the DRC to foster collaboration across spheres, including agriculture.

Kamerhe also proposed that the relevant authorities of Vietnam and the DRC coordinate to consider opening their embassies in respective countries./.
