London (VNA) – Vietnam is stepping up international collaboration to tackle human trafficking and illegal migration, as Minister of Public Security General Luong Tam Quang engaged in high-level talks with UK and French officials on the sidelines of the Border Security Summit in London on March 31.
In a meeting with UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, both sides reaffirmed their strong cooperation in migration management, human trafficking investigation, and immigration control. They praised the successful implementation of key agreements and the organisation of three Vietnam-UK migration dialogues at the deputy ministerial level.
The two sides committed to expanding annual high-level exchanges and reinforcing cooperation through Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on human trafficking prevention, immigration data sharing, and migration issues. To solidify these efforts, they signed a new action plan on combating human trafficking.
Quang's discussions with French Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau highlighted growing security collaboration between the two nations. Both sides acknowledged progress in fighting transnational crime, preventing illegal migration, and strengthening law enforcement cooperation. Their ministries have signed many cooperation documents, covering the repatriation of illegal residents, migration control, and extradition.
Acknowledging the ongoing challenges posed by both traditional and non-traditional security threats to national security in both Vietnam and France, the two sides stressed the need to expedite internal procedures for finalising the MoU on cooperation in immigration and the government-level MoU on the repatriation of illegal residents. France pledged to support Vietnam in training public security officers for UN peacekeeping missions and enhancing their French language skills.
Minister Quang also met with the UK Director General of Border Force and law enforcement leaders from Spain, Ireland, and other nations to advance cooperation in security and law enforcement. The parties reaffirmed their firm commitment to preventing any organisation or individual from using their territory to undermine the security of the other country.
