Vietnam wins first gold at Asian Martial Arts Games

Taekwondo artist Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu won Vietnam’s first gold at the first Asian Martial Arts Games in Thailand when taking the women’s bantamweight (51-55kg) division.

Thu defeated Chinese Taipei ’s Kuan I-wen in August 4’s final afterdowning Sardarova Saule of Kazakhstan in a semi-final and PhovilayXaykaseng, of Laos in a quarter-final. She defeated Choi Sun-hee fromthe Republic of Korea in the preliminary round.

By late afternoon of August 4, Vietnam won one gold, two silver andthree bronze medals, ranking 7 th among participating teams.

The Republic of Korea was leading the medal tally.

Vietnam sent an 87-member team to the competition to compete inwushu, taekwondo, pencak silat, muay, karate and judo. All of themartial arts styles originated in Asia . Nearly 40 countries areparticipating in the competition./.
