Hanoi (VNA) – The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

– Party General Secretary To Lam attended the All People's Security Safeguard Festival and the inauguration of the President Ho Chi Minh’s monument in Tan Trao, the northern province of Tuyen Quang on August 14.

The event came ahead of the 80th anniversaries of August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2), alongside the foundation of the People’s Public Security Force and the 20th anniversary of the All People’s Security Safeguard Festival, also observed on August 19. Read full story

– Party General Secretary To Lam has urged the northern province of Tuyen Quang to stick to the goal of fast and sustainable economic development, review its long-term growth strategy to leverage regional synergies and define a new position on the national development map.

At a working session with the Standing Board of the provincial Party Committee on August 14, the Party leader commended the Party Organisations, administrations and people of former Tuyen Quang and Ha Giang provinces, which were merged into new Tuyen Quang province on July 1, for their unity, achievements, and smooth governance transition. – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has called for a coordinated national effort to build a culture of fire prevention, strengthen natural disaster prevention and control, and rescue operations, urging authorities to expedite a scheme to reduce serious fire-related casualties and economic losses.

PM Chinh made the appeal at a dialogue on fire prevention and firefighting, rescue, security, and digital transformation for socio-economic development in Ho Chi Minh City on August 14, which was held by the Ministry of Public Security on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Vietnam People’s Public Security Force and the 20th anniversary of the "All People’s Security Safeguard Festival". – Politburo member, Secretary of the National Assembly (NA)’s Party Committee and NA Chairman Tran Thanh Man chaired a meeting of the NA Party Committee’s Standing Board in Hanoi on August 14 to discuss personnel affairs.

The meeting approved the list of official and alternate delegates for the NA’s first Party Congress for the 2025–2030 term. It also endorsed the criteria, number, structure, and proposed allocation of personnel of the NA delegation to attend the 14th National Party Congress slated for early 2026. Read full story

– Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has signed a decision to consolidate the national steering committee for the implementation of Vietnam’s commitments at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26).

Under Decision No. 1732/QD-TTg dated August 12, 2025, which took effect the same day, PM Chinh will serve as head of the committee, with Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha as deputy head. Read full story

– Vietnam has called on nations to respect and fully implement international law, particularly the UN Charter and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), while respecting the sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction of other countries and avoiding unilateral actions that could escalate tensions at sea.

At a high-level open debate titled “Maritime Security: Prevention, Innovation, and International Cooperation to Address Emerging Challenges” recently held by the UN Security Council, Minister Counsellor Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, affirmed that the UNCLOS, together with international legal instruments on maritime affairs, environment, and crime prevention at sea, has established a comprehensive legal framework for ocean governance and settlement of maritime security challenges. – On the occasion of the diplomatic sector's 80th anniversary (August 28, 1945–2025), Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang shared key milestones and contributions of consular and citizen protection affairs to Vietnam’s diplomacy, as well as strategic directions for elevating these efforts in the new development phase.

Talking to the press, the diplomat said that from its early days, consular affairs and the protection of citizens’ rights and interests have been among the core tasks of the diplomatic sector. Initially tasked with promoting patriotism, mobilising overseas Vietnamese's support for the homeland, and participating in the resistance wars, the first consular offices were opened in India, Myanmar, and Indonesia, laying the foundation for establishing diplomatic missions and marking the first steps in the consular and citizen protection work. – Vietnam’s banking sector has completed a comprehensive review and verification of all customer records, both individual and corporate, linked to payment accounts using digital channels.

According to the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), the process involved validating and updating more than 120.9 million individual records and over 1.2 million organisational accounts with biometric data obtained through chip-based ID cards or VNeID e-identification platform, ensuring 100% coverage for active digital payment accounts. – Hanoi is entering its busiest tourist season of the year as the capital city is preparing for celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2).

Hotel bookings have risen 40-50% compared with the same time last year. Small and mid-sized hotels, as well as homestays in downtown areas such as Ba Dinh, Hoan Kiem, and Hai Ba Trung, have been fully booked well in advance. Two military officers promoted to rank of Senior Lieutenant General
