Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is expected to introduce a Training Module for Combating Fake News regarding the safe and responsible use of social media in the Kuala Lumpur Declaration during the 47th ASEAN Summit and related Summits in late October.
Malaysian Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said at the Seminar on Developing Training Module for Combating Fake News in ASEAN 2025, the initiative aims to assist ASEAN member states in tackling fake news, misinformation, malinformation, and disinformation.
Fahmi expressed hope that the module would help ASEAN not only remain a neutral, prosperous, and closely connected region, but, more importantly, ensure a safer internet, helping prevent fake news and online scams.
The module was developed around five main aspects: understanding modern disinformation, AI-driven misinformation, fact-checking and digital verification, legal and ethical frameworks in ASEAN, and values and ethics of information.
The Malaysian minister confirmed that the module is expected to be signed at the upcoming “ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI)” meeting.
Malaysia has taken proactive measures to tackle the problem, including requiring social media platforms to address the spread of fake news and prevent online crimes such as fraud and scams.
The seminar was organised by the Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute, in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development, with the aim of raising awareness among ASEAN media practitioners about solutions to combat fake news./.
