Vietnam extends condolences over passing of former Uruguayan President

Jose Mujica, who was known as the world's "poorest president" because of his modest lifestyle, passed away on May 13 after a period of struggling against esophageal cancer.

Hanoi (VNA) – State President Luong Cuong on May 16 sent a condolence message to President of Uruguay Yamandu Orsi over the passing of former President of the South American country Jose Mujica Cordano.

Jose Mujica, who was known as the world's "poorest president" because of his modest lifestyle, passed away on May 13 after a period of struggling against esophageal cancer.

Mujica, born in 1935, a former guerrilla fighter, became the President of Uruguay and a symbol of world revolutionaries. He fought against the military dictatorship and was imprisoned for 14 years.

After democracy was restored in Uruguay, Mujica ran for presidency and was elected in 2010. He governed Uruguay from 2010 to 2015 and became the most beloved president in the country because people considered him an example of frankness, honesty and fairness.

On May 13, the Uruguayan Government declared three days of national mourning for the former leader./.

NA Standing Committee's key work agenda for 2026 approved
