Bangkok (VNA) – The Vietnamese Consulate General in Khon Kaen hosted a ceremony on August 28 in Thailand’s Udon Thani province to commemorate the 80th Nation Day (September 2).

The event brought together some 800 guests, including diplomats, local leaders, friendship and business associations, and overseas Vietnamese.

Vietnamese General Consul Dinh Hoang Linh recalled the historic moment when President Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnam’s independence at Ba Dinh Square on September 2, 1945, affirming the nation’s right to freedom and sovereignty.

Over the past 80 years, Vietnam, from a war-torn nation, has emerged as a dynamic and responsible member of the international community, pursuing sweeping reforms, driving socio-economic progress, and expanding global integration, he said, adding Vietnam has made positive contributions to peace, stability, cooperation, and sustainable development in the region and the world.

He emphasised that the traditional friendship with Thailand holds a special place in Vietnam’s journey towards prosperity and strength. The historical mark of President Ho Chi Minh’s activities in Thailand nearly a century ago, coupled with the positive contributions of the Vietnamese community in the country, continues to solidify the foundation of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.

The diplomat took the occasion to express his gratitude to the Thai government and authorities of northeastern provinces for their support policies for the Vietnamese community, voicing confidence that the overseas Vietnamese will remain a vital bridge in strengthening bilateral ties and fostering closer bonds with the host society.

Leaders from Udon Thani and Khon Kaen, in their remarks, praised Vietnam’s remarkable progress over the past eight decades, highlighting the nation’s solidarity, courage, and sacrifice that have transformed it into a key player in ASEAN and the wider international arena.

They laid stress on the close bonds between their localities and the Vietnamese community regarding history, culture, and economy, hailing the Vietnamese and Thai people’s contributions to the local development and the robust friendship between the two countries./.
