Aviation authority issues storm alert, airlines adjust schedules

Hanoi (VNA) - The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has issued an urgent alert as typhoon Kalmaegi is approaches, warning that eight airports across the central region may face direct impacts.

According to the CAAV, the Da Nang, Phu Bai, and Lien Khuong International Airports, along with the domestic airports of Chu Lai, Phu Cat, Tuy Hoa, Pleiku, and Buon Ma Thuot, are forecast to be directly affected. The Cam Ranh and Dong Hoi airports have been instructed to remain on alert and continuously update weather developments.

To mitigate risks, the CAAV ordered all aviation units to maintain round-the-clock emergency duty and strictly comply with procedures for responding to tropical storms. Airports must inspect runways, communication and navigation systems, reinforce storm and flood control measures, clear drainage systems, and secure equipment and construction projects. Construction activities at the Chu Lai and Phu Cat airports are required to pause at designated technical points and prepare recovery plans in case of damage.

Meteorological units have been tasked with providing frequent weather updates and warnings to support airlines and air traffic controllers. Airlines and service providers have been advised to closely track the storm’s movement and adjust flight schedules to prioritise safety.

National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines announced widespread schedule changes on November 6 and 7. Flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Cat (VN1390, VN1391, VN1394, VN1395 on November 6; VN1392 and VN1393 on November 7) will be cancelled.

Several flights on the Hanoi–Phu Cat and Ho Chi Minh City–Chu Lai routes will depart earlier than planned, while others will be delayed until weather conditions improve.

Flights to Tuy Hoa, Pleiku, Buon Ma Thuot and Phu Bai will also be rescheduled, mostly to depart after midday. Vasco will suspend flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Lien Khuong on November 6.

More than 50 flights operated by Vietnam Airlines Group are expected to be indirectly affected. Passengers are advised to monitor updates, fasten seatbelts throughout the flights due to potential turbulence, and check notifications via the airline’s digital platforms or hotline at https://zalo.me/3149253679280388721./.
