An Giang (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung, together with a delegation, inspected and held a working session with key officials of the Mekong Delta province of An Giang on the implementation of key infrastructure projects serving the 2027 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Week in the Phu Quoc special zone, on September 23.
The Deputy PM inspected several major projects under construction, including Phu Quoc International Airport, APEC Conference Centre, as well as Duong Dong 2 and Cua Can reservoirs.
At the working session, he urged provincial leaders and investors to promptly resolve obstacles to speed up project progress, stressing the need to fully leverage mechanisms and policies issued by the Party and State.
According to provincial reports, out of 21 APEC 2027 infrastructure projects, An Giang has selected investors for seven off-budget projects, and approved contractors for eight public-investment projects. Five projects have met or exceeded schedule, including the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion, Bai Dat Do urban area, Nui Ong Quan urban area, and underground infrastructure works in An Thoi and Duong Dong.
Difficulties remain regarding investment procedures, land clearance, resettlement, PPP (public-private partnership) investor selection, licensing of construction materials, and wastewater treatment pricing.
To address these, Deputy PM Dung approved key decisions of splitting the APEC avenue project into two sub-projects with 70% central budget support; maintaining the 70% support mechanism for the urban rail project; and expediting the transfer of Phu Quoc airport infrastructure assets to the investor before October 1, to ensure timely expansion.
He also directed the province to urgently find investors for the wastewater, clean water, and conference center projects, while acknowledging its proposal to fund a coastal road on Phu Quoc island. The province was asked to reassess financial capacity for 2026–2030, mobilise social resources, and work with the Ministry of Finance for possible support to be submitted to the Prime Minister./.

Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son, who is also Chairman of the National Committee for APEC 2027, underlined that hosting the APEC Year is a top-tier political and diplomatic task, providing an opportunity for Vietnam to showcase its role, responsibility, and strategic position in economy and trade as the new international economic order takes shape.
