Dragon fruit origin e-traceability system introduced in Binh Thuan

An innovative e-traceability system to track the origin and carbon footprints of each dragon fruit have been introduced at a conference in the south-central province of Binh Thuan.

Hanoi (VNA) - An innovative e-traceability system totrack the origin and carbon footprints of each dragon fruit have beenintroduced at a conference in the south-central province of Binh Thuan.

The event, themed "Digital Transformation towards GreenAgriculture and Sustainable Development," was co-hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) on August 17.

Local and international consumers who buy or import dragon fruitsfrom the province, can now transparently scan the QR code to trace the fruit originsand the levels of “green” or environment-friendly practices applied to producethe fruit.

In the context of green transition in agriculture, this is an important toolfor local producers and businesses in Vietnam to track and manage thegreenhouse gas (GHG) emission level of the supply chain and avoid unnecessaryrestrictions to export to the high-end markets, where carbon border adjustmentmechanism is on the rise.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister Hoang Trung said digital transformationis a must responsibility, huge obligation, and in interests of the entireproducing system, especially farmers.

“It is a crucial instrument for producing high-quality agricultural products atthe lowest cost and most significant profit," he said.

He also added that the ministry had established the Centre for DigitalTransformation and Agricultural Statistics - a unit in charge of informationtechnology, digital transformation, and information security of the ministry.

Patrick Haverman, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Vietnam,said: “We are proud to collaborate with the Ministry of Agriculture and RuralDevelopment in spearheading some innovative solutions to support the green andsustainable transformation in agriculture.”

He added that it is good news that the digitalised carbontraceability systems have been established for two major exports in Vietnam,namely dragon fruits and shrimp.

The tool is essential to local government, businesses, producersand consumers to operate in a green economy, where “green” identities and“green” standards are required as new normal, he said.

By harnessing technology to drive climate-smart practices of businesses andenhance the resilient livelihoods of local farmers, we are collectively pavingthe way for a greener, more prosperous future for Vietnam’s agriculture, hesaid./.

Vietnam races to restart idle ethanol plants to meet surging demand

Do Van Tuan, Chairman of the Vietnam Biofuels Association, said that monthly ethanol demand for the E10 blend is projected at 92,000–100,000 cu.m. The country’s six ethanol plants have a combined design capacity of roughly 41,000 cu. m per month, but only three are now running, churning out about 25,000 cu.m, or just 25–27% of demand. Even if every plant hits full tilt, local supply would cover only around 41% of national needs.
