Cairo (VNA) - The successful August Revolution on August 19, 1945 and the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on September 2, 1945 were a great turning point in its history, marking the beginning of a new era - the era of national independence linked with the freedom and happiness of the Vietnamese people, according to General Secretary of the Egyptian Communist Party Salah Adly.
Granting an interview to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA)’s correspondent in Cairo on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of these two events, Salah Adly said that for the first time, after thousands of years of feudal and colonial domination, the Vietnamese people regained control over their own destiny and asserted their proud position in the world.
This victory demonstrated the intelligence, mettle, and burning desire for independence of the Vietnamese people, while also proving the immense strength of the great national unity under the wise and sound leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh. From this point onward, Vietnam appeared on the world map as an independent, sovereign nation.
Salah Adly assessed that, on the international level, this event held immense value. In 1945, when the old colonial system still dominated in most parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America, the fact that a small colonial nation won independence through its own strength became a powerful source of encouragement for the global decolonisation movement. The August Revolution, along with the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, helped shake the colonial-imperial order, affirming the inevitable trend: the right to independence and freedom is sacred and inviolable for every nation in the world.
Speaking about the will of independence and self-reliance of the Vietnamese people, the General Secretary assessed that this is their source of strength for the Vietnamese people and the decisive factor behind the success of the August Revolution.
Throughout the subsequent wars of resistance against foreign invaders, this spirit was further strengthened, not only reflected in their will to fight but also in their creativity in military tactics, self-sufficiency in production, and the ability to adapt, from using crude weapons to mastering modern arms and ensuring logistical support for the battlefield.
According to the Party leader, in the process of national construction and development, Vietnam’s spirit of independence and self-reliance has been concretised in the economic development path of self-sufficiency, closely linked with international integration. The achievements made over nearly 40 years of “Doi Moi” (Renewal) prove that, from a poor and backward country, Vietnam has now become one of the leading economies in the region, an attractive destination for international investors, and continuously improved the living standards of its people.
Notably, this spirit is clearly reflected in all of its external activities. Vietnam adheres to a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralisation and diversification, expanding cooperation while safeguarding national sovereignty and interests. This is the strength and foundation that allows Vietnam to confidently integrate and assert its worthy position on the international stage, he added./.
