Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Party General Secretary To Lam has urged the Party Organisation of Ho Chi Minh City to translate the Party and State’s policies and guidelines into concrete results, create breakthrough institutions, and renew the growth model to develop a special urban area.

Addressing the first congress of the municipal Party Organisation on October 14 morning, the Party chief praised the city's remarkable progress over the past four decades of Doi Moi (renewal), especially during the five years implementing the resolution adopted at the 13th National Party Congress. The city’s achievements, he said, stemmed from the Party’s steadfast leadership, the effective coordination of ministries and localities, and above all, the intrinsict strength of the local Party Organisation and people. - National Assembly (NA) Chairman Tran Thanh Man has signed a Resolution laying out Vietnam’s legislative agenda for 2026.

Under the resolution, the NA Standing Committee agreed to submit 13 draft laws for review and approval at the 16th NA’s first session in April 2026. They are the amended Civil Status Law, the Law on Procedures for Issuing Administrative Decisions, the revised Law on Access to Information, the amended Law on Belief and Religion; and the laws on amendments and supplements to several articles of the Social Insurance Law, the Law on Notarisation, the Law on Overseas Representative Missions of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Law on Real Estate Business, the Housing Law; the Law on Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harm, the Law on Environmental Protection Tax, the Law on Legal Assistance, and the Law on Emulation and Commendation. - Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son presided over a meeting of the steering board for the Opening for Signature of the UN Convention against Cybercrime and related events in Vietnam on October 13.

Established by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, the board is tasked with advising and proposing effective solutions for the organisation of the signing ceremony of the UN convention and related activities, scheduled for October 25-26 in Hanoi. The committee also coordinates and supervises the participation of relevant ministries and localities to ensure smooth organisation of the event. Read full story

- The first Party Congress of Ho Chi Minh City for the 2025-2030 tenure opened on October 14 morning, with the presence of 546 delegates representing over 366,000 members of the city Party Organisation.

Attending the event were Party General Secretary To Lam, and Politburo members: Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, and Permanent Member of the Party Central Committee's Secretariat Tran Cam Tu, along with many incumbent and former high-ranking leaders of the Party and State. - Vietnam has continued to strengthen its global tourism brand with a series of prestigious wins at the 2025 World Travel Awards (WTA) for Asia and Oceania held on October 13 in Hong Kong (China).

- Ho Chi Minh City will pilot the operation of its new digital government management platform across the entire city from October 15 to the end of this year.

The platform features six core functions, namely monitoring and reminding tasks assigned by the Government Office; tracking and prompting tasks from the municipal People’s Committee; enabling instant task assignment; sending personal task reminders; maintaining a contact directory; and supporting individual and group communications for task coordination. - The 100th founding anniversary of the Cao Dai religion was marked in Ho Chi Minh City on October 14.

Nguyen Huu Nhon, head of the Management Board of the Nam Thanh oratory, reviewed the development and contributions of Cao Dai, noting that the Nam Thanh oratory, formerly known as the Cau Kho oratory, is recognised as the birthplace of the religion. Read full story

- Nearly 1,000 big-spending Chinese tourists entered Vietnam on October 14 through the Mong Cai international border gate in the northern province of Quang Ninh for a MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) getaway.

The group consists of high-rolling travelers from various Chinese provinces. They attended a conference in Dongxing, China, ahead of a five-day, four-night stay at upscale hotels in Quang Ninh. Read full story

- Vietnam Airlines on October 14 issued an urgent notice regarding a data security incident involving its online customer service platform operated by a global technology corporation.

According to information from the platform provider, Vietnam Airlines is one of many international businesses affected. A portion of customer data processed through this system may have been accessed without authorisation. Read full story

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has approved a nine-day holiday for the 2026 Lunar New Year (Tet) – Vietnam’s largest traditional celebration.

The break will run from February 14 (the 27th day of the 12th lunar month) through February 22 (the 6th day of the 1st lunar month)./. Read full story

Top legislator calls for strict discipline to further enhance quality of NA operations

Chairman Man clearly outlined key tasks for the time ahead and requested the prompt finalisation and promulgation of newly adopted laws and resolutions, proactive reviews to ensure consistency with new guidelines, and thorough preparations for the upcoming elections of deputies to the 16th NA and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 tenure.

Minister of Foreign Affairs receives Japan’s Tochigi Governor

Trung suggested that Tochigi continue to effectively implement signed agreements and further strengthen cooperation in areas that can create new development momentum for Vietnam, such as science and technology, digital transformation, innovation, and the training of high-quality human resources.

PM suggests acceleration of Laos–Vietnam University establishment

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said the two sides should strengthen the teaching and learning of Vietnamese and Lao in both countries, including introducing Vietnamese as an optional foreign language in Lao schools, while continuing academic exchanges and programmes on tradition education to nurture the special bilateral relationship, he said.

Cook Islands attaches importance to ties with Vietnam

Sir Tom Marsters, Representative of King Charles III to the Cook Islands welcomed the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Cook Islands and Vietnam in April 2022, describing it as laying a long-term vision for friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Government sets out coordinated plan for 2026 elections

The plan also aims to ensure that the elections are conducted in a democratic, equal and law-abiding manner, while being safe and cost-effective, truly becoming a nationwide civic event, thus contributing to strengthening and enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of the state apparatus and building a socialist rule-of-law state of Vietnam of the people, by the people and for the people.
