Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia is considering setting up a national registry for domestic violence offenders to help track repeat offenders and strengthen protection for women and children, according to Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Nancy Shukri.
The proposal used to be discussed at a domestic violence case coordination meeting on April 29 with the participation of representatives from relevant ministries and government agencies.
In a recent written reply to the parliament, Nancy said her ministry is working with the police and the judiciary to develop a mechanism for recording and monitoring repeat offenders through criminal records and other relevant registries.
She said the proposed registry will strengthen efforts to prevent domestic violence, improve law enforcement and provide better protection for victims. However, she stressed that the initiative must be carefully assessed to ensure it complies with legal, ethical and human rights standards.
The official reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to addressing domestic violence through a comprehensive approach involving both government agencies and society, with a focus on prevention, victim protection, intervention and rehabilitation.
She added that the Domestic Violence Committee will continue to serve as the platform for coordination, monitoring and discussion among ministries, departments and agencies to ensure the effective implementation of policies, programmes and initiatives related to domestic violence. The ministry will also continue reviewing and strengthening standard operating procedures and service delivery arrangements to ensure complaint mechanisms and victim protection systems remain effective and responsive./.
