Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia is planning to establish a transit centre capable of accommodating 1,000–2,000 foreign workers as part of efforts to strengthen migrant labour management, enhance security, and ease airport congestion.
Human Resources Minister R. Ramanan said on July 6 that the facility would temporarily accommodate foreign workers after they arrive in Malaysia and before they are collected by their registered employers.
The minister said the measure is intended to strengthen oversight of foreign workers' movements and prevent them from being taken away by unauthorised parties.
He added that the Cabinet has tasked the Human Resources Ministry with studying the proposal as part of broader efforts to improve Malaysia's foreign labour management system. The initiative is also expected to help reduce congestion at airports.
The ministry is currently identifying suitable locations for the transit centre in consultation with relevant government agencies. Ramanan said it would continue refining the proposal while engaging with labour-sending countries through Malaysia's existing diplomatic channels. Authorities will also study successful models adopted by countries such as Singapore, the Republic of Korea and several Middle Eastern nations.
In a related development, Ramanan reaffirmed that Malaysia would continue taking firm action against employers who fail to provide legally compliant accommodation for foreign workers, forcing them to live in illegal settlements.
He stressed that the Human Resources Ministry would strictly enforce existing regulations on employers' obligations to provide proper housing for foreign workers./.
