Addressing the hand-over ceremony, the Norwegian Embassy to Vietnam’sFirst Secretary Thea Ottman said the Government and the Red Cross ofNorway wished to join efforts to help lessen losses in human andproperty for Vietnamese people, who live in a region prone to naturalcalamities.
Praising the operation of the Vietnam Red Cross over the recent time,the Norway Red Cross’s Coordinator for Asia , Gideon Tesfai said thiswas also an occasion for the two countries’ Red Cross organisations toboost their cooperation.
According to Deputy President and General Secretary of the Vietnam RedCross Doan Van Thai, the relief aid will be used to buy foods andessential goods and build houses for flood-hit families.
The Vietnam Red Cross also said the MasterCard Worldwide company hasannounced a 50,000 USD aid for the victims of typhoon Ketsana.
The aid is part of a 200,000 USD package the company gives to India ,the Philippines , Indonesia and Vietnam to overcome storm and floodaftermaths.
Typhoon Ketsana, the ninth of its kind hitting Vietnam so far thisyear, in late September claimed 163 lives and caused heavy losses tothe country’s central and Central Highlands localities.
In addition to the assistance from the Government and fellow-citizens,the localities also received aid from foreign governments,organisations and individuals which has amounted to 2.7 million USD.
The same day, the Vietnam Red Cross also received medical equipmentworth 75,000 USD granted by the Japanese Embassy to Vietnam to helpprovide medical check-ups and treatment to poor people in remote andisolated areas, families benefiting the State’s preferential policies,Agent Orange victims and war victims in Vietnam./.
