17th Singapore Maritime Week opens

The 17th Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2023, themed ‘Ambition Meets Action’, convened on April 24, bringing together the global maritime community to take collective and accelerated action to digitalise and decarbonise.
Singapore (VNA) - The 17th Singapore Maritime Week(SMW) 2023, themed ‘Ambition Meets Action’, convened on April 24, bringingtogether the global maritime community to take collective and acceleratedaction to digitalise and decarbonise.

Organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) incollaboration with industry stakeholders and the research community, theweek-long event is expected to gather some 20,000 maritime professionals,including delegates from governments, port authorities and internationalorganisations, and industry experts, among others.

In his speech at the opening ceremony of the SMW, S Iswaran,Singaporean Minister for Transport and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relationsemphasised three areas of ambition for continued growth and success in themaritime industry, namely ensuring steady progress for maritimedecarbonisation, aligning international standards in the move towards greaterdigitalisation, and redoubling efforts to attract and nurture talent.

Lasting until April 28, the programme features close to 50 events, especially the SMWLeaders’ Perspectives panel discussion on maritime green transition, andworkshops on marine technology and human resources.

Within the course of the week, to commemorate the 75thanniversary of the adoption of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Conventionand 25th anniversary of the IMO-Singapore Memorandum of Understanding on theThird Country Training Programme, Minister Iswaran has announced that Singaporewill pledge a new enhanced technical co-operation and training package1 of 5 million USD for the 2024 to 2028 period comprising fellowships, scholarships,workshops, and courses for IMO and its member states./.
