Hanoi (VNA) – The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.
– Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on December 5 gave in-principle approval to the proposals to pilot free trade zones (FTZs) and develop a national oil refining, petrochemical, and energy centre at the Dung Quat Economic Zone.
Speaking at the meeting with Deputy PMs and leaders of ministries and Government agencies, the PM asked the Ministry of Finance to refine the FTZ proposal for submission, ensuring feasibility and effectiveness to contribute to socio-economic development, especially the realisation of the two strategic centenary goals. – The Government’s plan to merge three national target programmes into one drew broad debate at the 15th National Assembly’s ongoing 10th session in Hanoi on December 5, with deputies insisting that the move will not diminish support for ethnic minority and mountainous communities.
The parliament held a plenary discussion on the investment policy for the national target programmes on new-style rural development, sustainable poverty reduction and socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas through 2035. Read full story
– Chairman of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee's Commission for Information, Education, and Mass Mobilisation Trinh Van Quyet has proposed that in the new period, his commission and the Central Committee of the Lao Front for National Construction (LFNC) should step up the exchange of experience in mass mobilisation and intensify joint communications on the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos.
Receiving a delegation from the LFNC Central Committee led by its Standing Vice President Inlavan Keobounphanh in Hanoi on December 5, Quyet, who is also Secretary of the CPV Central Committee, also suggested expanding professional exchanges between departments in charge of communications and mass mobilisation on both sides. – Director of the Vietnam Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) Le Minh Ha affirmed Vietnam’s determination to fulfill its international commitments under the UNESCO Convention and Copenhagen Declaration at the World Conference on Doping in Sport that wrapped up in Busan, the Republic of Korea, on December 5.
The five-day meeting, organised by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), focused on tightening international standards and charting the final stretch toward the 2027 World Anti-Doping Code. Read full story
– The Vietnam Economic and Financial Forum took place on December 5, focusing on positioning Vietnam in the new context and its strategic economic–financial vision for 2026–2030.
The event, jointly held by the Ministry of Finance (MoF) in coordination with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), builds on the Vietnam Finance Forum, which the ministry has organised annually since 2017. Read full story

– Vietnam has planted more than 1.43 billion trees over five years of implementing the 2021–2030 one-billion-tree programme, surpassing its original target by 43.9%, reported the Forestry and Forest Protection Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.
The total comprises 573.9 million scattered trees and 865.2 million trees grown in concentrated plantations, equivalent to 429,125 hectares of forest. Read full story./.
