Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s electricity production and import reached 22.24 billion kWh in February, representing a 12.6% increase over the same time last year, according to the Vietnam Electricity (EVN).

Cumulative power output in the first two months of this year totaled 45.06 billion kWh, dominated by coal-fired thermal plants with 55.1%, followed by hydropower with 20.6%, and renewable energy 16.3%. Imported electricity accounted for only 1.9%.

The EVN ensured sufficient electricity for the country’s socio-economic development over the two-month span. The state-owned utility also excelled in water discharge management and power provision for pumping stations for the winter-spring rice cultivation season in the northern midland and Red River Delta regions.

On the investment front, major power projects, comprising the Hoa Binh hydropower extension, Quang Trach I thermal power plant, and Bac Ai pumped-storage hydropower plant, were advanced on schedule. Regarding the power grid, the EVN initiated 13 new projects and completed 28 grid projects ranging 110 to 500 kV, including the 500kV Monsoon – Thanh My transmission line for power import from Laos.

In March, the corporation has ordered its member units to focus on implementing the Government and Prime Minister’s directives to achieve this year’s targets while enforcing prevention of wastefulness. Besides, it aims to ensure electricity supply during the upcoming peak dry season months by coordinating closely with the National System and Electricity Market Operator Company (NSMO) to optimise national grid operations.

Power generation companies must secure adequate fuel supplies and adhere to strict technical management protocols to maintain unit availability and reliability.

The EVN is set to accelerate construction on key power projects, ensuring the Hoa Binh hydropower extension project can generate power in Q4 and Unit 1 of Quang Trach I thermal power plant will be connected to the grid before September 2, as directed by the Prime Minister.

The EVN and power firms will collaborate with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and provincial authorities to organise activities supporting the "Nationwide Energy Conservation in Response to Earth Hour 2025" campaign.

To ensure electricity supply for economic development and public needs under all circumstances, the EVN advised consumers to use electricity efficiently, especially during midday and evening peak hours. Particular attention should be given to rational air conditioner use, setting to temperatures of 26-27°C or higher while avoiding simultaneous operation of multiple high-power appliances during peak hours./.
