Hanoi (VNA) – The Indonesian government has summoned representatives of Meta Platforms Inc., ByteDance’s TikTok, and other social media platforms, ordering them to step up content moderation amid the rapid spread of disinformation online.
Such disinformation, particularly on TikTok and Meta’s Instagram, has fueled public anger and triggered protests against the government, Deputy Minister of Communications Angga Raka Prabowo said.
The government, therefore, urged the platforms to proactively moderate or remove such content – along with material related to pornography and online gambling – without waiting for an official request, he added.
Separate meetings with TikTok and Meta have been scheduled for later this week, while invitations will also be sent to Elon Musk’s X and YouTube Indonesia, he noted.
TikTok and Instagram each have more than 100 million users in Indonesia, among the largest worldwide.
Recently, several disinformation cases have surfaced on Indonesian social media, including a deepfake video of Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati falsely claiming that teachers were a burden to the country, and old footage of riots in Jakarta mislabeled as recent. These incidents have fueled protests on August 25, which led to hundreds of arrests./.
