Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has instructed state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) to procure 30 new commuter train sets for Greater Jakarta within one year.
Speaking at the inauguration of the renovated Tanah Abang Station in Jakarta on November 4, President Prabowo asked KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin how long he would need to fulfill the order. Rasyidin replied that he would need six months.
He announced an allocation of 5 trillion Rp (about 299 million USD) for the project and directed KAI to complete implementation within a year to ensure quality.
The addition of new trains is expected to help ease traffic congestion, improve the quality of public transport services, and promote sustainable socio-economic development in Indonesia’s most densely populated urban area.
Alongside upgrades to the capital’s railway network, the President also underscored the importance of expanding rail systems on other major islands such as Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi to reduce logistics costs and strengthen interregional economic connectivity./.
