Jakarta (VNA) – Jakarta is now entering a state of waste emergency, requiring serious action to reduce its waste production, said Indonesian Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.
The Indonesian Government has issued Presidential Regulation No. 109 of 2025 concerning the management of urban waste processed into renewable energy based on environmentally friendly technology, which stipulates the Environment Minister’s authority to determine a waste emergency status.
He added that Bandung city has also entered a waste emergency state, and the West Java Governor must immediately address the issue.
The minister called for collaboration with the Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) programme in the cement industry, and construction of medium-and small-sized treatment facilities nationwide.
Data from the Ministry of Environment’s National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) showed that Jakarta generated 8,600 tonnes of waste per day in 2023, amounting to over 3.14 million tonnes throughout the year./.
