Hanoi (VNA) - Lao media outlets have highlighted the country's strong and consistent commitment to joining the international community in combating cybercrime, one of today’s most significant non-traditional security challenges.
Thongloun Sisoulith, General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee and President of Laos, led a delegation to the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime (also referred as Hanoi Convention), held in Hanoi on October 25–26.
Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security Vilay Lakhamfong signed the Convention and lauded the Government of Vietnam for its proactive role in drafting the instrument since 2019 and hosting the successful signature event. He described the Convention as a key legal tool in the fight against cybercrime and affirmed that the signing reflects the international community’s trust in ASEAN member states' role.
Lao media emphasised the strong political will of Laos to participate in building an international legal framework to support the use of information technology for economic development, trade, investment and tourism, while ensuring safe online spaces for its people.
The media outlets also stressed that the signing ceremony will help promote digital transformation — one of Laos’ national priorities — in guiding its socio-economic development and achieving the sustainable development goals.
In Algeria, e-newspaper Algerie360 also described the country’s signing of the Convention as a historic step in international digital-security cooperation.
Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Communities Abroad and African Affairs Lounès Magramane signed on behalf of Algeria.
The signing reaffirms Algeria’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation to combat global cyber threats, while demonstrating its determination to build a safe and reliable cyberspace for the common benefit of humanity, the newspaper said./.
