Laos shows interest in BRICS membership

Laos is interested in becoming a BRICS member and is seeking cooperation with other “open mechanisms”, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone said on September 5.

Hanoi (VNA) – Laos is interested in becoming a BRICS member and is seeking cooperation with other “open mechanisms”, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone said on September 5.

Speaking at the plenary session of the 10th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), PM Siphandone stressed that Laos is considering joining BRICS while looking to engage within the framework of its open mechanisms. According to him, such cooperation frameworks enable parties to find solutions to modern challenges.

The Lao leader noted that BRICS has demonstrated significant results in terms of economic growth as well as its influence on global economic development./.

Thailand, Laos aim to boost bilateral trade

Laos is Thailand’s 7th largest trading partner in ASEAN and 18th globally. From January to October 2025, two-way trade grew by 18.65% to 8.18 billion USD, with Thai exports increasing by 16.90% to 4.81 billion USD and imports rising by 21.23% to 3.60 billion USD.
