Malaysia, US upgrade relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the upgrade of the bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership reaffirms the enduring depth of Malaysia-US cooperation in strategic areas, including trade and investment, advanced technology, defence and security, energy security, regional peace and stability, and people-to-people ties.

Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia and the US have elevated bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, marking a historic advancement in the ties between the two countries.

The announcement was made after a bilateral meeting between Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and US President Donald Trump in Kuala Lumpur during the US leader's official visit to Malaysia to attend the 13th ASEAN - US Summit and the 20th East Asia Summit.

In a press release, the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the upgrade of the bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership reaffirms the enduring depth of Malaysia-US cooperation in strategic areas, including trade and investment, advanced technology, defence and security, energy security, regional peace and stability, and people-to-people ties.

The agreement also further solidifies Malaysia's role as a vital and trusted partner of the US in the Asia Pacific region.

Meanwhile, the White House announced that the US and Malaysia are expected to sign a cooperation agreement to diversify the supply chain of essential minerals and promote investment cooperation.

Malaysian media reported that Malaysia-US relations have been strong since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1957. In 2014, the two countries upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership. The US is among Malaysia’s largest trading partners and biggest investors cumulatively with total trade between the two nations was valued at 71.39 billion USD in 2024./.
