Hanoi (VNA) - Secretary of the Party Central Committee and head of its Commission for Policies and Strategies Tran Luu Quang hosted a reception in Hanoi on May 28 for a visiting bipartisan delegation of the US House of Representatives led by Congressman John Moolenaar (Republican – Michigan), a member of the House Committee on Appropriations.
Welcoming the first bipartisan US congressional delegation to visit Vietnam in the year marking the 30th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties and the second year of the Vietnam-US comprehensive strategic partnership, Quang spoke highly of the efforts made by both sides in building and advancing the relationship.
He noted that the two countries have established a solid foundation to further strengthen ties and expand cooperation, particularly in economy, trade, investment, science and technology. He expressed hopes that bilateral relations will grow in a more substantive and positive manner.
The Vietnamese Party official underlined the need for both sides to share in each other’s challenges during the course of cooperation, and proposed that the US consider removing Vietnam from its list of countries subject to restrictions on strategic exports, facilitating enhanced scientific and technological collaboration, and contributing to ensuring bilateral trade balance.
On the tariff issue, he called for continued negotiations based on a cooperative spirit and understanding of each other's demands, aiming for a harmonious agreement that protects the interests of both sides and reflects the current state of bilateral ties.
At the reception, Quang also briefed the US legislators on Vietnam’s major policy directions in the lead-up to the 14th National Party Congress scheduled for early 2026, including the pivotal role of science and technology, the private economic sector, and key policies related to health care, education, and social welfare.
For their part, Congressman Moolenaar and other delegation members conveyed their impression at Vietnam’s dynamic development and the positive trajectory of US–Vietnam relations in recent years. Reaffirming the US’s recognition of Vietnam’s strategic role in the region, the delegation expressed a strong desire to deepen bilateral cooperation.
Regarding tariff issue, Moolenaar lauded Vietnam’s constructive approach and voiced optimism about a mutually beneficial outcome to ongoing negotiations—one that would serve the interests of both nations’ citizens and businesses.
The US lawmakers affirmed their commitment to supporting stronger bilateral cooperation across a range of areas, contributing to a more effective and practical comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries./.
