Seoul (VNA) – Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and the Republic of Korea (RoK)’s President Lee Jae Myung agreed on November 2 to establish a strategic partnership between their countries and expand cooperation across various sectors, including defence and trade.
The leaders announced the launch of the strategic partnership during a joint press conference at the Office of the RoK President following their talks, which took place during Wong's official visit to the RoK, Yonhap News Agency reported.
Under the strategic partnership, the two countries will step up cooperation to better tackle global challenges such as climate change and transnational crimes while deepening ties in the areas of security, defence, artificial intelligence, advanced technology, people-to-people exchanges, and transnational crimes like online scams.
The two sides also reached their first agreement on the export of beef and pork from Jeju Island to Singapore.
During the meeting, they also signed memoranda of understanding on digital cooperation, logistics and shipping, culture, and sports.
Lee said the two countries have many similarities, in that they have both achieved remarkable growth based on human capital and an open free trade order despite limited land, scarce resources and challenging geopolitical environment.
Meanwhile, Wong noted significant potential for collaboration such areas as the green industry, digital industry, security and defence, and expressed full support for the RoK’s efforts to promote peace on the Korean Peninsula.
The Singaporean leader was in Seoul after attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting and related events held in the southeastern city of Gyeongju./.
