Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni has signed a royal decree promulgating the amendment to the Constitution's Article 33 on nationality.
The revised article affirms that Khmer citizens residing abroad are under the protection of the State. It also stipulates that matters concerning the acquisition and loss of Khmer nationality, including the revocation of citizenship, shall be governed by law.
The amendment was proposed, reviewed, and approved by Cambodia’s legislative bodies earlier this month. On July 11, the 7th National Assembly adopted the amendment during its 4th session. The Senate then gave it a full review and endorsement during an extraordinary session held on July 14.
This constitutional change follows a recent proposal by Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen, who in late June urged the Ministry of Justice to explore the possibility of amending the Constitution. His recommendation aimed to allow for the revocation of citizenship from individuals found to be colluding or conspiring with foreign entities in actions deemed harmful to national interests./.
