Vientiane (VNA) – Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith has wrapped up an official visit that held great significance to the enhancement of his country’s traditional relations with Russia.
The visit from July 30 to August 1 was the first trip to Russia by President Thongloun Sisoulith since he took office.
During the talks between the Lao leader and Russian President Vladimir Putin, they reviewed and highly valued their countries’ bilateral and multilateral cooperation, saying the relationship is based on mutual understanding and support, along with the strategic partnership on security in the Asia-Pacific.
The Lao President appreciated Russia’s assistance, especially in human resources training through increasing scholarship programmes.
The two sides agreed to promote cooperation in multiple potential areas, including politics, security, defence, economy, trade, investment, education, and tourism.
During the meeting, they also discussed some regional and international issues of shared concern.
The visit demonstrated both countries’ commitment to further strengthening and developing the strategic partnership to generate tangible benefits for both Lao and Russian peoples./.
Russia intends to expand sea transportation to Laos through Vietnam’s ports
In 2024, Laos-Russia trade increased by 66%, and by another 20% for the first five months of 2025. The establishment of new transport routes is expected to facilitate the transportation of goods between the two countries.
