Indonesia, Australia to optimise comprehensive strategic partnership

Indonesia and Australia will advance shared development priorities, strengthen people-to-people ties, and deepen cooperation in regional defence and security.

Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono and his Australian counterpart Penny Wong agreed to optimise the two countries’ comprehensive strategic partnership during a recent meeting in Sydney.

The two sides will continue to push the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership through mutually beneficial cooperation in critical sectors such as trade and investment, critical minerals, and electric vehicles and battery products, Sugiono stated following a meeting with Wong on March 20.

He also highlighted other potential areas of cooperation, including agriculture and food security, education and research, defence and security, and people-to-people relations.

The Indonesian official viewed the meeting with Wong as a testament to the strong relations between the two countries, founded on shared values, respect for national sovereignty, and a commitment to promoting peace in the Indo-Pacific region and globally.

Meanwhile, Wong emphasised that mutual trust and strong friendship with Indonesia serve as a strong foundation for fostering economic cooperation under the comprehensive strategic partnership.

According to a joint statement, both countries agreed to optimise the strategic partnership by advancing shared development priorities, strengthening people-to-people ties, and deepening cooperation in regional defence and security.

The two ministers then agreed to update the Indonesia – Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan for the 2025–2029 period ahead of the upcoming leaders' meeting./.
