Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia is committed to sustainable ocean management at the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC-3) in France.
Speaking at the event held on June 9-13, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono emphasised the urgent need for global cooperation to address challenges such as ocean warming, rising ocean acidification, declining fish stocks, and pollution.
Indonesia continues to demonstrate its leadership through concrete actions in blue economy policies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), he stated.
Indonesia implements blue economy concrete actions, such as expanding marine conservation areas to cover 30% by 2045, implementing responsible quota-based fisheries, promoting sustainable aquaculture, monitoring coastal ecosystems, and involving communities in reducing plastic waste in seas.
Currently, Indonesia protects over 29 million hectares of marine areas and ranks among the countries with the largest blue carbon reserves globally, storing about 17% of the world’s blue carbon from mangroves and seagrass.
Minister Trenggono announced that Indonesia will host the Ocean Impact Summit to celebrate World Ocean Day in 2026./.
