Jakarta (VNA) – Sustainable design for urban infrastructure was the focus of a panel discussion held in Jakarta on June 12, as part of the 2025 International Conference on Infrastructure.
Rachmat Kaimuddin, Deputy Minister at Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development, emphasised that sustainable urban infrastructure design is a key element in safeguarding both human populations and the planet, especially in the face of accelerating climate change and rapid urbanisation.
Takeda Sachiko, Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Office for Indonesia and ASEAN, noted that Japan and Indonesia share many geographic similarities and are both exposed to similar natural disasters. The two countries have long-standing cooperation in infrastructure development, covering airport expansion, underground railway construction, and regional transport connectivity.
Indonesia, with over 17,000 islands, is among the countries most vulnerable to rising sea levels, storms, flooding and seismic activity. Jakarta, in particular, is experiencing severe land subsidence — with some areas sinking by as much as 25 centimetres per year — which, coupled with tidal surges, has led to increasingly frequent and severe flooding./.
