Indonesia’s tourism industry booming with strong growth

With the target of attracting 14.6–16 million international visitors this year, Indonesia is confident of asserting its position as one of Asia’s fastest-growing and most attractive tourism destinations.

Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia’s tourism industry is entering a booming phase, welcoming 8.5 million international arrivals in the first seven months of 2025, up 10% year-on-year.

Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said the country hosted 13.9 million foreign visitors in 2024, a 19% increase from 2023. This strong momentum has continued into 2025, underscoring the growing appeal of the archipelago nation on the global tourism map.

Domestic tourism has also witnessed remarkable growth. In 2024, the number of domestic trips surpassed 1 billion. By July 2025, this figure had risen 19.25% year-on-year, reflecting the surging demand among Indonesians for travel and leisure.

According to Wardhana, the sector’s recovery and growth are not only about numbers. Indonesia is pursuing a long-term vision of improving visitor experiences, preserving the environment and cultural identity, and ensuring benefits for local communities.

To sustain this growth, Indonesia is placing strong emphasis on training young human resources. Speaking at the graduation ceremony of Makassar Tourism Polytechnic, the minister expressed her hope that tourism polytechnic graduates should possess technical expertise, leadership abilities, cross-cultural communication skills, and strong integrity.
