Bangkok (VNA) – The border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia can still be resolved through diplomacy, Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow has said.
As reported by Thai PBS, Sihasak admitted that the new round of confrontation between the two countries is a cause for serious concern but he believes peace is possible through diplomacy. Diplomacy is possible only when both sides are ready to sit down and talk, he said.
Fresh News reported that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia, which holds the ASEAN chairmanship this year, held telephone conversations with his Cambodian and Thai counterparts, Hun Manet and Anutin Charnvirakul, to discuss recent developments along the two countries’ border.
In a Facebook post on November 13, Anwar said both Thai and Cambodian leaders reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing a peaceful resolution, in line with the understandings agreed under the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord.
He also reiterated Malaysia’s position that the friendship and ceasefire between both countries must be further strengthened in accordance with the agreement concluded in Kuala Lumpur last month.
The PM also conveyed Malaysia’s readiness to continue playing its role as a facilitator in charting this path towards peace./.
