Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – The ASEAN Foreign Ministers have urged Thailand and Cambodia to implement an immediate ceasefire over the ongoing border dispute between the two countries.
They also called on both sides to return to the negotiating table and refrain from taking any actions that may undermine peace efforts.
In the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Statement on Thailand – Cambodia Border Dispute released on July 27, they expressed their deep concern over the ongoing situation which has resulted in an increasing number of casualties on both sides, and destruction of public properties, as well as displacement of a large number of people along the border areas.
They emphasised the need to settle disputes and differences by peaceful means, based on the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, the ASEAN Charter, as well as the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) and in the spirit of ASEAN family, unity and good neighbourliness.
The diplomats also affirmed their support for the efforts of Malaysia – the 2025 ASEAN Chair – in facilitating both sides to resume dialogue and ending the fighting./.
