Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand announced on July 25 morning that it had evacuated more than 100,000 people along its shared border with Cambodia amid escalating tensions in the region.
According to Thailand’s Ministry of Interior, a total of 100,672 residents from four border provinces had been relocated to designated shelters.
A deputy spokesperson of the Thai Ministry of Public Health reported that, as of 21:00 on July 24, 14 people had been confirmed dead and 46 injured in military clashes near the Thailand–Cambodia border. Cambodia has yet to release any official figures on casualties.
In a related development, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is believed to convene an emergency meeting on July 25 to address the ongoing border clashes between Cambodia and Thailand. The closed-door session, requested by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, is scheduled for 15:00 local time.
Meanwhile, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has issued a travel advisory urging British nationals to avoid non-essential travel to certain areas in Cambodia and Thailand due to the current situation./.
Thailand submits final proposal in tariff talks with US
Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Pichai Chunhavajira said Thailand has submitted its final proposal to the US and expressed his hope that Washington would reduce import tariffs on Thai goods from 36% to a rate closer to that of other countries in the region.
