Drug trafficking in northern Laos sees complicated developments

On August 18 afternoon, Bokeo police intercepted a truck carrying about 6 million meth tablets (equivalent to 600kg) near the Mekong River.

Vientiane (VNA) - Drug trafficking in northern Laos has continued to see complicated developments as authorities in Bokeo province seized nearly 15 million methamphetamine tablets in less than a week.

On August 18 afternoon, Bokeo police intercepted a truck carrying about 6 million meth tablets (equivalent to 600kg) near the Mekong River.

Earlier, on August 14, local authorities stopped another major shipment, confiscating 881kg of drugs.

Bokeo has long been considered a hotspot for drug trafficking as it borders the “Golden Triangle,” one of Southeast Asia’s largest drug-producing and smuggling hubs.

Lao authorities have warned that criminal networks are becoming increasingly reckless and have called for stronger domestic and international cooperation to tackle the situation./.

Unpaid credit card balances in Singapore hit record high in 10 years

Experts attributed the worrying trend to factors like people not spending within their means, consumer culture emphasising prestige items, and easier access to credit like “buy now, pay later” services. Analysts said this can be a hint of growing financial pressures faced by Singaporeans amid rising prices.
