Can Tho (VNA) – The 10th International Conference on Sustainable Agriculture and Animal Husbandry in Developing Countries (SAADC) opened on October 1 at Can Tho University.
The annual forum brings together more than 300 delegates from 27 countries, including researchers, experts, business leaders and stakeholders, providing a platform to exchange knowledge, share experiences and explore innovative solutions for sustainable livestock farming.
At the opening session, Professor Dr Tran Ngoc Hai, Vice-Rector of Can Tho University, highlighted this year’s theme: “Circular Livestock Production Systems: Solutions for Sustainable Development”. He noted its relevance amid pressing global challenges such as climate change, resource depletion and food security. He stressed that circular livestock models, which reduce waste while optimising resources, can boost productivity, protect the environment and support rural livelihoods, contributing to global sustainable development goals.
The four-day conference features presentations on climate-adaptive production, antimicrobial resistance management, One Health approaches, and advances in genetics, nutrition and circular resource use. Organisers said the insights shared would provide practical guidance for livestock development in developing countries, including Vietnam.
Professor Dr Juan Boo Liang, President of SAADC 2025 from Universiti Putra Malaysia, noted this is the first time the conference has been held in Vietnam. Choosing Can Tho, the Mekong Delta’s regional hub, highlights international focus on one of the areas most vulnerable to climate change.
Over nearly two decades, the SAADC series has become a key forum for scientists and policymakers to share research and practical experience, shaping the future of livestock farming in developing nations. Experts say the sector is critical for global food security, nutrition and livelihoods, but faces pressure to adopt sustainable practices, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to increasingly extreme climate conditions.
Research and solutions presented at SAADC 2025 are expected to promote environmentally friendly policies and strategies, enhance competitiveness and sustainability in agriculture, and strengthen Vietnam’s scientific profile internationally while opening new opportunities for cooperation in the livestock sector./.
