Hanoi (VNA) – At least 12 people were killed in landslides in Malaysia’s Sabah state after days of heavy rain on Borneo island, news reports said on September 16.

According to rescue authorities, more than 2,000 residents in low-lying areas, including the capital Kota Kinabalu, have been evacuated. The deadliest incident occurred on September 15, when debris buried a temporary house, killing eight people, including four children.

Continuous heavy rainfall over the past 10 days has triggered flooding and landslides, damaging numerous houses and infrastructure in Sabah, Malaysia’s poorest state. Local authorities have canceled Malaysia Day celebrations on September 16 to focus on disaster response.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has ordered urgent rescue operations and warned of further downpours that could worsen the situation./.
