Phnom Penh (VNA) – At least 13 people were killed and dozens injured in two serious road accidents that occurred on May 23 in Cambodia’s Kampong Chhnang and Svay Rieng provinces, according to the country’s Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training.
Ministry spokesperson Sun Mesa said the first accident took place in Kampong Tralach district of Kampong Chhnang province, northwest of Phnom Penh, when a large truck collided with a vehicle transporting factory workers on National Road 5.
The crash claimed the lives of eight workers, while 10 others suffered serious injuries and several more sustained minor injuries.
The second accident occurred in Svay Rieng city in the province of the same name, located southeast of Phnom Penh, killing five workers and leaving five seriously injured and 16 others with minor injuries.
Following the accidents, the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), the provincial Departments of Labour and Vocational Training, and relevant authorities launched emergency rescue operations, coordinated the transfer of victims to hospitals, and referred critically injured patients to higher-level medical facilities.
Sun Mesa said the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training would coordinate funeral arrangements and cover all burial expenses for the deceased workers. Injured victims will also receive benefits and compensation in accordance with the law.
Most worker transport vehicles in Cambodia are modified trucks or converted passenger designed to carry larger numbers of passengers. As a result, traffic accidents involving such vehicles often lead to severe casualties./.
